Mary Williams Hyde...tells us "I am putting together a collection of Great Basin ranch photos taken of working buckaroos over the last fifteen years to publish in what I hope will eventually be a series of books. I took photos at Spanish Springs Ranch, 3-Dot Ranch, Soldier Meadows Ranch, Yamsi Ranch, the Fairclo Ranch, the Yainix Ranch, the ZX Ranch, The Californios, Richard Caldwell’s ranch, Warren Johnson’s branding, the Paisley Big Loop Ranch Rodeo(2005 and 2006), Jordan Valley Big Loop Rodeo, Glen Shelly’s Ranch Bronc Riding, Burns Ranch Rodeo, the Masten Ramsey event in Alturas, California, Lakeview Roundup, and Adel, Oregon ranch brandings. I had also spent two days photographing the historical sale of the MC Ranch horses in the early 90’s, and have collected a treasure of buckaroo and ranch photos from many other places.I am currently choosing photos from this collection, taking new photos, and writing editorial for the book with my cousin, Ginny Hyde Jayne and 2-3 others who have fabulous stories to tell of the buckaroo lifestyle. For Ginny and me, this will be our second book together. Our first book, Oregon Outback, has become a sought-after classic and is nearly out of print, with only a few copies left.
| This year (2006) I’m traveling extensively with a new, much faster digital camera throughout eastern Oregon, Northern Nevada and Northern California. I now use a Nikon D200 digital camera (always with a tripod) and usually take 3000 or more hi-rez photos for a weekend shoot, then spend days editing them, before putting them up on my website for people to buy copies of through the Shutterfly online photo processing system. As I said, I have more than 10,000 photos up there now. Next year I will hopefully add another 10,000-20,000 photos or more to my body of work . In addition to revisiting the events I attended this year, I will be focusing more on remote ranch photography, documenting the traditional buckaroo lifestyle of the Great Basin that is rapidly diminishing. Even though I live in the city to make a living, I grew up on a large cattle ranch and that is where my heart resides forever. |
