This issue's opinion
The combination of cowboy story-tellin' and art is as essential to cowboy art as is the separation of paintings, drawings, scultpure, and photography from the story form and poetry.
All of these forms are good basic cowboy art in that both the written word and
the art are dynamic and give the reader/viewer the feel of the cowboy life, which is
basic to both the artist and the CAPA mission.
One of the important aspects of this is that the telling of stories is, as you well know, an important part of the cowboy - and non-cowboy - western tradition. At least, it was before
radio and television; story telling can't be replaced by the modern media, especially
in carrying on the oral tradition of a life that a lot of people still dream about
but are not quite sure if it's one they would really want to live. So this kind of work
provides a vicarious enjoyment for a large audience. The good story, like the good painting, is a good art form, and is one we can all appreciate and/or in which we can all participate.

Will Rogers Medallion Award
The Academy of Western Artists is proud to announce its Will Rogers Medallion Award to four Cowboy Poetry books released in 2002, books that exemplify outstanding excellence in content and design. Each of these volumes was judged to be of enduring quality, and each represents the best examples of preservation and celebration of the history and spirit of the
West.
The winning books are "A Little Bit of Texas" by Rod Nichols, "Where the Prairie Flowers Bloom" by Yvonne Hollenbeck, "Somewhere Between Earth and Heaven" by Mike Dunn, and "Cowboy Poetry: Horse Tracks Through the Sage" by
Sunny Hancock and Jesse Smith.
AWA Director Bobby Newton says "Each of these books is a lasting contribution to the cowboy heritage movement, and each of these fine efforts stands as an example that will influence the quality of future Cowboy Poetry publications." A blind jury selected the winning books, using rigorous criteria. Each of the award-winning Will Rogers Medallion books and many others are eligible for the Buck Ramsey Award for Best Cowboy Poetry Book, which is given based on the result of votes by AWA members and announced at the annual AWA awards show (held this year on July 8, 2003, in Fort Worth, Texas. Dixie Lou Wilson has always achieved a feeling of peace and tranquility through nature, and she has attemptred to portary those feelings in her images. Dixie says "I'm a country girl, raised in Southeastern Montana and have grown to appreciate the magic of the outdoors and wildlife. When I moved to Billings, I began hiking in the Beartooth Mountains. I was overwhelmed with the beauty of the fragrant flowers and breathtaking landscapes. I began to photograph these magnificient sights about four years ago and I soon became interested in other subjects. Most of my photographs are taken in a natural setting thus revealing the true beauty of the landscape. I use a Nikon F90 35 millimeter camera and professional slide film, which produces very sharp images. Photographing and competing with other photographers has provided me with new ideas and better ways of seeing while maintaining my own style. This has encouraged me to begin marketing my work and pursue my passion. I find it very exciting and rewarding to be able to convey my feelings through images on film.
