This Issue's Opinion

The Web - Good for Reviewing Art

Theres a lot of art out there in cyberland - including cowboy art and all of its related forms. So anyone interested in art in general, or in specific content, finds a lot to look at.

The only problem, my friends, is what do we see? Does the Internet play fair with art images?

The answer is probably yes and no.

The best an online image can do is giuve you a pretty good indication of what the work looks like. Not every monitor produces shows colors the same way. Your monitor screen resolution has much to do with the quality of the image. Your operating system (OS) can affect what you see. The photograph or scan of the original work affects what you see online. Sculptors, in paricular, if not knowledgeable about phtography, produce images which are unfair to their actual work.

The point of this is twofold: 1)if you are the artist, make sure you produce images as close to the real thing as possible, and 2) if you're a buyer, make sure you at least get a high quality photo of the work you want to buy from the artist. Since the computer can make a lousy appearance look great, and vice-versa, this way you won't be disappointed.

We live in a world of art. No question about that. Every advetisment with graphics, every television ad, every book jacket, almost everything we look at conatins art. Even text is art. Art is reality. This newsletter and our web sites are directed towards one genre of art, although other art content is also available

Look, you enjoy cowboy and western art. This is good, because it opens you up to enjoy all art. Just as you have your favborite authors, TV shows, painters, molvies, musicians, you also gain, through your enjoyment of those art forms, an appreciation for reading, music, and art in their many conformations.

Renee Chambers, owner of the famous horse artist Cholla, recently sent me an e-mail asking for advice on some captions she was thinking of using for a photograph. One of these read "Art Prevails". Whether Renee realized it or nor, this is a truism.

Art has been with mankind as long as mankind has existed. Art is a medium much the same as the written word ("A poicture is worth a 100 words(?)"), and like the written word, a work of art can be, and is, interpreted in different ways.

Art should be true free speech - and in free societies is probably the most dramatic form of free expression we have. Let's keep it that way.
